Well, lots of opinions here, but I'd like to add my own as a lecturer in film here in Australia.

First comment: older editions had a nice balance of "foreign" (ie non-English-speaking) and English language films. So many of the proposed additions are from the U.S. which, if adopted, would take the book out of balance.

So I'd support additions of Triplets of Belleville. Waltz with Bashir, Let the Right One In and add I Served the King of England.

German cinema has had a fine resurgence recently, so I would be most disappointed if Downfall or The Lives of Others were omitted. I would strongly suggest the addition of The Harmonists (aka The Comedy Harmonists). Also consider The Bader-Meinhoff movie and The Counterfeiters.

I havn't seen too many exceptional French films recently, but the one stand-out is Tell No One.

As for Australian movies, I'd agree with NOT including Australia; it's as if someone had given a bucket of money to Baz and told him to include every Australian icon he could find. By the same token, I'd be disappointed if Lantana and Rabbit-Proof Fence were excluded; both are fine examples of brilliant narrative and direction.

Not sure if Lust, Caution is in the current list; if not, it should be, as one of the few Asian movies around with universal appeal. The Good, the Bad and the Weird seems to have many adherents; I havn't personally seen it, so I won't comment.

Comments on these comments most welcome!

Just an addition to the above post...happy to contribute to 1001 Movies in any way (as a response to the request for author input to the book).

Avatar, up in the air, the hurt locket, precious

all of these moves are highly deserving of being added to the list.

Well, perhaps, but Oscar winners and nominees should not be automatic entries into a book of this stature. The best that can be said is that they may be pointers to further analysis. The Hurt Locker did well in other ceremonies, so it should certainly be worth examination. If Avatar was included, it could only be for technical brilliance, which is exactly what Oscar thought; Precious was noteworthy for the acting, but this of itself doesn't a good film make; Up in the Air was good but not outstanding.

There were three "foreign language" films ("foreign" to whom?) also worth looking at: Secrets of her Eyes, which won in that category, The White Ribbon and The Prophet. Take a look at the many highly favourable global reviews for these on the IMBD forums. Unfortunately these films are not all readily available for public viewing.

Avatar is the most successful movie of all time, not to mention the ground breaking technology that it introduced to completely revolutionize the way movies are made. Avatar will always be remembered, and i think should be added to this list.

I believe the next edition should heavily take into account the many lists made of the best films of the decade. By doing so, the requirement to add several deletions arises, in particular Mulholland Drive, which has claimed its place as one of the most recognized films of the 21st century.

The additions of newer films needs to stop, too, or at least be shortened. The most recent edition alone has 30 or so movies from 2003 through 2007. Recognition of recent movies is key, but you'll be hard pressed to find someone in agreement that 30 pictures from 4 recent years deserve to stand alongside Citizen Kane and The Godfather and Vertigo. It just shouldn't happen. This is 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, not 900 Or So Movies You Must See Before You Die Plus Some More Recent Ones We'd Like To Recognize.

For more additions, I believe Kill Bill Vol. 1 should be changed to just Kill Bill. I'd like to see Big Fish on here, My Neighbor Totoro, Casino Royale over The Bourne Ultimatum (a revisionist vision and possibly best entry in a long-running series trumps the best entry in a short, recent series), and I'm Not There. I also think that many of your deletions should be reconsidered. If the book is to cover this decade, The Hurt Locker is a must. Avatar is a possibility since this is not necessarily a best movies list. Personally, I'd like more Pixar recognition due to the tendency of the film community to look down on animation. From 2008, Slumdog Millionaire could be the best choice. Benjamin Button, The Wrestler, and Frost/Nixon seem to follow the trend of recent additions like Apocalypto in that they're not really deserving. The Boondock Saints should be on here as well, since this is not a best movies list (if it were it should not even be considered), and it remains one of the biggest cult movies since The Shawshank Redemption.

Deletions I think should encompass many newer movies and restore older deletions. If The Dark Knight is added, Tim Burton's Batman should be gone forever since it looks like child's play by comparison. Gangs of New York, which has been supported by many previous posters, deserves no spot on this list since it is messy, bombastic, overblown, and one of Scorsese's worst films. It should not be mentioned in the same sentence as The Departed if The Departed stays.

And I agree with the next cover being Eraserhead.

Hi, I for one do not agree with some of the deletions that has happened within the recurring editions.
Rosetta: It won the Palme D'Or and had the laws changed in Belgium!
Royal Tenenbaums: Keep Rushmore over this? Tenenbaums is his masterpiece
Lost In Translation: Fantastic movie from Sofia Coppola
The Big Lebowski: Many argue that it is the perfect movie!

Fantastic book otherwise though! :)

I hope this new book gets released sometime soon

I definitely agree that The Dark Knight should be added. I also want to see The Wrestler in the new update, along with The Hurt Locker, Waltz With Bashir, Inglourious Basterds, Gran Torino, Avatar, and Wall E. I don't agree with deleting Into the Wild, which was a really good movie.

For past revisions, I don't agree with deleting Mulholland Dr.

I also agree that The Big Lebowski should be in here. It was a big shock to me that it wasn't in the list.

Some other movies from different years that I'd like to see on the list are

Blood Simple
Barton Fink
Dead Poets Society
Dead Ringers
Dumb and Dumber
A History of Violence
Minority Report
Nightmare Before Christmas
The Road Warrior
South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut
Witness
