This one's a lot trickier than say movies—how do you count whether you've heard an album or not? Do you have to sit down and listen to the whole thing straight through without distractions and really concentrate on the music? Do you have to own it? What if you know and love half the songs from hearing them somewhere else but you've never actually heard the entire album? What about those albums that you hate but you can't avoid hearing on the radio or elsewhere? What if you've heard the album a million times but can't name a single track, or don't even know the name of the album? Does that still count?

My subjective count is about 125, rounding down conservatively. I lean towards the "have-to-listen-to-the-whole-thing-straight-through" side, or maybe even the "have-to-own-it" one, so that reduces my count considerably.

Any thoughts?

it is trickier than seeing a movie (or especially trickier than reading a book!) since music can kind of casually hang around. i haven't actually counted the ones i've heard, but i'll get back to you. i think it's around 200-ish. i probably shouldn't admit this but i am buliding an excel file that will encompass the 1001 albums, books and movies lists in separate tabs, organizable by artist, title, year, etc. etc.

I've only got 20-something done. Usually, I am somewhat focused on the music. But sometimes if I've listened to at least half of it, I come back to it later.

I guess my being older, great lover of music, and a collector of albums (vinyl and CDs) since the mid-50's, I can honestly say that my count is very high compared to many of the younger persons here in this forum. I have a list of all 1001 (including the adds and deletions in 2006) and after counting past 500 of the ones I have heard (and love too), I just plain stopped counting. Glancing at the rest uncounted ones, I would say that I have heard probably about 80% of these all.

[and most of these albums (in this list of 1001) I had in my original collection of over 8,000 albums -- I should say that WAS my collection BEFORE an angry husband destroyed and threw out my entire collection while I was at work -- he got religious (aka "the devil's music") ...but since then have collected over 4,000 more albums!!! I even love the heavy metal, and other music most persons my age (60) don't like.]

Music keeps us all young (hee hee)

I'm actually building a collection of as many of these discs as I can find on cd. As of now, I'm up to about 770. I don't know how many can be realistically collected on cd because a good number of these are out of print and exceedingly difficult to find or expensive to acquire. Some just aren't available on disc at all. So I guess I'll have to look for those on vinyl.
